Curaçao
Curaçao is an island in the southern Caribbean Sea in the Dutch Caribbean region, just north of the Venezuelan coast. The official language is Papiamento, however most people on the island also speak Dutch, Spanish and English.
Curaçao has a stable political climate with an open economy of tourism, international trade, shipping services, oil refining, storage (oil and bunkering) and international financial services being the most important sectors.
The establishing of the offshore industry in Curaçao started in the 1940’s. On the brink of World War II, a number of Dutch multinationals transferred their corporate seats to the Netherlands Antilles (of which Curaçao formed a part at that time and in the meantime was dissolved in 2010) to avoid occupation by the enemy.
Most of them went to Curaçao. After the war these companies were transferred back to Holland, but by then the offshore industry was founded in Curaçao.
Here are a few factors why people choose Curaçao
- Strategic geographical location and convenient time zone
- Good communication infrastructure
- Stable political and social climate
- A legislation that guarantees property rights
- Attractive tax climate for non-residents
- Advantageous tax treaties
- No exchange control in offshore International activities
- Strong representation by major accounting firms, international banks, law firms and fiscal advisors
- Strong work ethic within the professional community
- Skilled and trained multilingual workforce
- Flexible attitude as to working licenses for expatriate experts for the offshore international corporations
All these factors contributed to Curaçao being a leading financial center for offshore international corporations for decades.
